About Simon Ho

Simon Ho (a.k.a. Hostettler) is a highly acclaimed Swiss composer and pianist. He is a musician who knows no stylistic boundaries. He has been studying and working within different styles and registers for the past twenty years. As a freelance composer for theatre companies and contemporary music, he has become well-known both in Switzerland and internationally. For his masters in composition, he has studied with Cristobal Halffter (E) and Edison Denisov (GUS); he has furthermore worked in seminars with Pierre Boulez in Paris. During different educational stays in Rome, Algeria, Paris and New York, he has deepened his knowledge of classical Arabian music, in serial composing techniques and new song structures. His pieces for chamber orchestras, string quartets, piano trios and horn ensembles have had their premiere at the International Lucerne Festival, at the Centro Para La Difusion De La Musica Contemporanea in Madrid, in Mexico, Paris and New York City. Ho has been guest composer at the Staatstheater in Stuttgart and the Stadttheater in Bern, he has written commissioned works for svereal different theatre groups in Switzerland and abroad. He works for and with children. He has written songs, musicals and operas for young persons and has directed several of these pieces. One of the most important aspects are the song- and band-projects he initiates. Simon Ho loves exchanges and working with artists from other cultural fields. He has collaborated with numerous people, e.g. Enrico Beeler, theatre director; Antonia Brix, theatre director; Cassis (b-blush), singer and songwriter; Eric Facon, producer; Lorenz Hasler ( I Salonisti), conductor and musician; Henk Hofstede (Nits), singer and musician; Shelley Hirsch, performance artist and singer; Andi Hug, musician; Hans Koch, musician; Kotscha Reist, painter; Peter Rinderknecht (Théâtre en gros t en détail), actor and director; David Mouchtar-Samorai, director; Anina Schenker, video artist; Res Wepfer (Pfannestil Chammer Sexdeet), musician and songwriter; Zoe Zag, singer and actress. Some of Simon Ho’s projects and bands stem from these collaborations. "Another Commission" was an adventurous big band that set poem by Meret Oppenheim to music (musicians include Corin Curschellas, Co Streiff, Hans Koch, Andi Hug), the "KIKO"-group (concerts for kids), the duo "Sounds" with Shelley Hirsch in New York, the song project "Before sleep" with Henk Hofstede (Nits), iliana Ferreira (Maozinha), Claudia Bettinaglio, Hank Shizzoe, Andi Hug, Lorenz Hasler, Shirley Grimes, Hans Koch and many more. In March 02, Ho undertook a small tour with a small band through Mexico; in August 02, he played two concerts with a 16 piece pop-big band. Simon Ho can be heard on a variety of CDs, amongst others works of I Salonisti, "Be-Stand", Isaac Biaas, Pfannestil Chammer Sexdeet, "Ohrewürm", "Hinter Deiner Schulter Geht Die Welt Unter" (short stories by T.C. Boyle set to music), Züri West and Shelley Hirsch "Far in, far out"– and naturally on his own CD "Before sleep" Simon Ho has won the composition contest of the city of Berne in 1992, with the Pfannestil Chammer Sexdeet the "Goldener Thunfisch" in 1999, and the New York scholarship of the city of Berne in 2000.
