About Shah
The global community knows several musical acts performing under the name Shah. Here are the ones known to us as of today, listed in descending order of popularity based on listening statistics from last.fm SHAH — thrash metal, Moscow, Russia SHAH is a thrash metal band formed in Moscow in 1985 by guitarist Anton Garcia. Although Garcia was already recognized among Moscow’s leading guitarists, he originally graduated from a jazz school as a drummer, which contributed to the band’s precise and rhythmically complex arrangements. The original lineup also included drummer Andrey Sazonov and bassist/vocalist Mikhail Zhemchuzhny. The band’s debut performance took place in December 1986 and quickly attracted attention within Moscow’s underground metal scene. SHAH soon became one of the notable early thrash metal acts in the USSR. Their growing reputation led to a collaboration with Valery Gaina of the band Kruiz, who offered them management support and opportunities to perform at larger venues. SHAH released their first cassette album, Escape From Mind, in 1988. Shortly after the recording sessions, Zhemchuzhny left the band, and Garcia assumed vocal duties. Several bassists passed through the lineup, including Vasily Molchanov and Andrey Girnik, before Anatoly Krupnov (later known for Black Obelisk) joined the group. In 1988, SHAH began working on their next album, Beware. A five‑track demo attracted interest from Western labels, resulting in a recording contract in Germany. Shortly before the studio sessions, Krupnov suffered a hand injury, delaying his participation; as a result, the bass parts were recorded last. Beware was produced by Valery Gaina and recorded at Red Line Studios in Munich in November 1988. During the sessions, the band performed a promotional concert filmed by Mosh/RTL, receiving a positive response from local audiences. The album was released in May 1989 by Atom H Records in Germany, with a Japanese edition issued by Teichiku Records. SHAH supported the release with extensive touring across Russia and Europe, including Germany, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Spain. In 1990, Alexey Ovchinnikov replaced Anatoly Krupnov, who returned to Black Obelisk. In 1991, SHAH recorded Terror Collection, a compilation combining early material from 1985–1987 (with Mikhail Zhemchuzhny returning to record vocals for these tracks) and three new songs — “Overload,” “Age of Darkness,” and “Terror Collection” — sung by Anton Garcia. The band continued performing with the addition of guitarist Dmitry Saar. In 1994, SHAH released a re‑recorded version of Escape From Mind (cassette only) and studio album P.S.I.H.O. on CD and LP, both through Moroz Records. In 1996, Anton Garcia launched the industrial‑oriented solo project Descent, releasing the album Inclination. In 2007, Metalism Records licensed the SHAH back catalogue and produced a limited run of Beware merchandise. In 2021–2022, SHAH recorded a new compilation of previously unreleased material, consisting of eight re‑recorded tracks from the 1985–1987 period and three new compositions. The album was recorded in Seville, Gdańsk, and Moscow, and completed in April 2022. It was officially released on June 30, 2022, and issued on CD, vinyl, and accompanying merchandise. The recording lineup featured Anton Garcia (guitar), Mikhail Zhemchuzhny (bass, vocals), and Cezary Borawski (drums).
