About The Servicemen

The mysterious Servicemen released three records on as many labels between 1966-1967 on Wind Hit, Chartmaker, and Patheway Records respectively. Probable members were James Mitchell and Hadley D. Murrell, who wrote the groups' recordings. They debuted with "I Need a Helping Hand" b/w "Are You Angry" in 1966 and followed it with "Sweet Magic" b/w "Connie" the same year; it all ended with "My Turn" b/w "I Need A Helping Hand" in 1967. The Servicemen — who probably were in the military, therefore the name — fell off the face of the earth musically. Little did they know that "I Need a Helping Hand" and "Sweet Magic" would become top Northern soul plays and still sought by collectors more than 30 years after appearing.
