About Santana (feat. Rob Thomas)

Santana is an American rock band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1966 by Mexican-born guitarist Carlos Santana. The band has undergone numerous changes in its recording and performing line-ups, with Carlos Santana as the sole consistent member. After signing with Columbia Records, Santana gained widespread attention following their performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and released Santana (1969), Abraxas (1970), and Santana III (1971) with the group's classic line-up, which included organist and lead vocalist Gregg Rolie, percussionists José "Chepito" Areas and Michael Carabello, drummer Michael Shrieve, and bassist David Brown. Notable songs from this era include Evil Ways (1969), Black Magic Woman (1970), Oye Como Va (1971), and the instrumental Samba Pa Ti (1970). After a line-up change in 1972, Santana explored jazz fusion and spiritual influences on albums such as Caravanserai (1972), Welcome (1973), and Borboletta (1974). The band achieved renewed commercial and critical success with Supernatural (1999), which included the crossover singles Smooth featuring Rob Thomas and Maria Maria featuring The Product G&B, both reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album topped charts in eleven countries, sold over 12 million copies in the United States, and won a record-tying nine Grammy Awards — including Album of the Year and Record of the Year — as well as three Latin Grammy Awards. In 2014, the classic line-up — excluding David Brown, who had died in 2000, and José Areas — reunited and recorded Santana IV (2016) along with a supporting tour. In 1998, the classic line-up of Santana, Rolie, Carabello, Shrieve, Brown, and Areas was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Carlos Santana received the Billboard Century Award in 1996, the Billboard Latin Music Awards Lifetime Achievement honor, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2013. Rolling Stone ranks him #11 on their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." In 2026, the Recording Academy awarded him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Santana is one of the best-selling music groups of all time, with over 100 million records sold worldwide and a total of 10 Grammy Awards and 3 Latin Grammy Awards. Recent activity In 2019, Santana released Africa Speaks, an acclaimed afrobeat-influenced album produced by Rick Rubin. Blessings and Miracles followed in 2021, featuring collaborations with Rob Thomas, Chris Stapleton, and Steve Winwood. That same year, Carlos underwent an unscheduled heart procedure, and in 2022 he collapsed on stage in Detroit due to heat exhaustion, though he recovered and resumed touring in both cases. The band's long-running Las Vegas residency, An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live, has been held at the House of Blues inside Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino since 2012 and is now in its 14th year. In 2024, Santana toured North America as part of the Oneness Tour alongside Counting Crows, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Supernatural. In March 2025, Santana released Sentient, a retrospective collection featuring 11 tracks — including three previously unreleased recordings — with collaborations from Michael Jackson, Miles Davis, Smokey Robinson, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, and Cindy Blackman Santana. The Oneness Tour 2025 continued with dates across the US and Europe through the summer and fall, though two April shows were postponed after Carlos was briefly hospitalized for dehydration in San Antonio. He returned to the stage days later and performed at the 2025 Latin Grammy Awards in November alongside Maluma, Grupo Frontera, and Christian Nodal.
