About Sepultura

Peeping Tom was an American rock project led by Mike Patton, active between 2000 and 2007. The project released one self-titled album, "Peeping Tom", and three singles through Sepultura is a Brazilian heavy metal band formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. The band's name comes from the Portuguese word for "grave". Sepultura became associated with genres such as thrash metal, death metal, groove metal, and deathrash during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Over time, the group's musical style incorporated elements of alternative metal, world music, nu metal, progressive rock, hardcore punk, and industrial metal. The band is also considered part of the second wave of thrash metal. Sepultura has released fifteen studio albums. Their debut album, "Morbid Visions", was released in 1986, followed by "Schizophrenia" in 1987. The latter attracted the attention of Roadrunner Records, which signed the band in 1988. Their third album, "Beneath the Remains" (1989), marked the band's international breakthrough. Subsequent albums including "Arise" (1991), "Chaos A.D." (1993), and "Roots" (1996) established Sepultura as one of the most commercially successful and influential heavy metal bands of the 1990s. The band has sold millions of records worldwide and received gold and platinum certifications in multiple countries. Throughout its history, Sepultura has undergone several lineup changes. Max Cavalera left the band in 1997, followed by Igor Cavalera in 2006. The lineup most commonly associated with the band's classic period consisted of Max Cavalera, Igor Cavalera, bassist Paulo Jr., and guitarist Andreas Kisser. Paulo Jr. joined the group shortly after its formation, while Kisser replaced guitarist Jairo Guedz in 1987. Since Igor Cavalera's departure, no founding members have remained in the band. The current lineup consists of Paulo Jr., Andreas Kisser, vocalist Derrick Green, and drummer Greyson Nekrutman. Sepultura was founded in Belo Horizonte by Max and Igor Cavalera after the death of their father, Graciliano Cavalera. The brothers cited bands such as Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Venom, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Kreator, and Sodom as major influences. Early lineup changes eventually resulted in a formation consisting of Max Cavalera on guitar and vocals, Igor Cavalera on drums, Jairo Guedz on guitar, and Paulo Jr. on bass. In 1985, Sepultura signed with Cogumelo Records and released the split EP "Bestial Devastation" with the Brazilian band Overdose. Their first full-length album, "Morbid Visions", was released in 1986 and included the song "Troops of Doom". The band later relocated to São Paulo. In 1987, Andreas Kisser replaced Jairo Guedz as guitarist. That same year, the band released "Schizophrenia", which demonstrated a shift toward a more technical thrash metal sound while retaining elements of death metal. The album received attention in Europe and North America and led to the band's signing with Roadrunner Records. Sepultura released "Beneath the Remains" in 1989, recorded with producer Scott Burns. The album received critical acclaim and expanded the band's international audience. Extensive touring followed, including the band's first performances in Europe and the United States. Music videos for songs such as "Inner Self" received airplay on MTV's "Headbangers Ball". In 1991, Sepultura released "Arise", recorded at Morrisound Studios in Florida. The album became the band's first to chart on the Billboard 200 in the United States. Songs such as "Dead Embryonic Cells" and "Arise" received significant exposure through music television and international touring. During this period, the band toured with acts including Slayer, Ministry, Motörhead, Testament, and Alice in Chains. The band's fifth studio album, "Chaos A.D.", was released in 1993. It represented a stylistic shift toward groove metal and incorporated influences from hardcore punk and industrial music. The album included songs such as "Refuse/Resist", "Territory", and "Slave New World". Sepultura toured extensively in support of the album and increased its international popularity. In 1994, Max and Igor Cavalera formed the side project Nailbomb with Alex Newport of Fudge Tunnel. The group released the album "Point Blank" and performed at Dynamo Open Air in 1995 before disbanding. Sepultura released "Roots" in 1996. The album incorporated Brazilian indigenous music and downtuned guitar work, and it became one of the band's most commercially successful releases. "Roots" is frequently cited as influential on the development of nu metal. Around this time, the band also contributed the song "War (Guerra)" to the benefit compilation "Silencio=Muerte: Red Hot + Latin". Later in 1996, tensions emerged within the band following the death of Max Cavalera's stepson Dana Wells in a car accident. Disagreements over management contributed to Max Cavalera's departure from Sepultura in December 1996. His exit was publicly announced in January 1997. After Max Cavalera's departure, Sepultura searched for a new vocalist. Derrick Green was selected in 1997. The first album featuring Green, "Against", was released in 1998. Although the album received mixed commercial results compared to earlier releases, the band continued recording and touring. In 2001, Sepultura released "Nation", their final album for Roadrunner Records. The following year, Roadrunner issued the live album "Under a Pale Grey Sky", documenting Max Cavalera's final concert with the band. After releasing the covers EP "Revolusongs" in 2002, the band issued "Roorback" in 2003 through SPV Records. The album received a more positive critical response than its predecessors. The concept album "Dante XXI", based on Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy", was released in 2006. Shortly afterward, Igor Cavalera left the band and was replaced by drummer Jean Dolabella. Igor and Max Cavalera later formed Cavalera Conspiracy. In 2008, Sepultura performed at the Latin Grammy Awards, including a rendition of "The Girl from Ipanema". The following year, the band released "A-Lex", a concept album inspired by Anthony Burgess's novel "A Clockwork Orange". It was the first Sepultura album without either Cavalera brother. In 2010, Sepultura signed with Nuclear Blast Records. The band released "Kairos" in 2011, followed by lineup changes that included the arrival of drummer Eloy Casagrande. Touring activity during this period included appearances at festivals such as Wacken Open Air and tours with Exodus, Destruction, and other thrash metal bands. In 2013, Sepultura released "The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart", co-produced by Ross Robinson and Steve Evetts. The album featured a guest appearance by former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. During the same period, a biography titled "Relentless - 30 Years of Sepultura" was published in several languages. The band's fourteenth studio album, "Machine Messiah", was released in 2017. Sepultura toured internationally in support of the album alongside bands including Kreator, Testament, Obscura, and Death Angel. Also in 2017, the documentary film "Sepultura Endurance" premiered. In 2020, Sepultura released "Quadra". Touring plans in support of the album were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, delaying live performances for more than two years. During the pandemic, the band released the collaborative project "SepulQuarta" in 2021, featuring contributions from musicians associated with bands such as Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax, System of a Down, Trivium, and Sacred Reich. In 2023, Andreas Kisser announced plans for a 40th anniversary tour. On December 8, 2023, Sepultura officially announced the farewell tour "Celebrating Life Through Death". The tour began in Belo Horizonte on March 1, 2024, and was intended to conclude around 2026. Shortly before the tour began, drummer Eloy Casagrande left the band and later joined Slipknot. He was replaced by Greyson Nekrutman, formerly of Suicidal Tendencies. In 2026, Sepultura released the EP "The Cloud of Unknowing", recorded with Nekrutman. Members of the band indicated that the farewell tour would mark the end of Sepultura as an active touring and recording group, although they did not rule out the possibility of future performances or reunions. Recordings. It featured a rotating lineup of collaborators, including Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, Dub Trio, Odd Nosdam, Norah Jones, Bebel Gilberto, Dan the Automator, Rahzel, and Kool Keith.
