About Rosenstolz & Nina Hagen
Rosenstolz was a German pop duo from Berlin, active from 1991 to 2012, consisting of singer AnNa R. and musician Peter Plate. The duo achieved chart success in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, with five of their studio albums reaching number one on the German albums chart. They split up to pursue individual music projects but did not rule out a future reunion. AnNa R. died in March 2025. Rosenstolz's music incorporated elements of pop, chanson, and rock, with lyrics often focusing on themes of love, sex, and emotions. Although some critics compared their music to schlager, the duo described themselves simply as a pop group and did not embrace that classification. Early in their career, the German media referred to their style as Mondänpop, reflecting their distinctive blend of musical influences and stylistic choices. Over time, their music became more mainstream, with later albums featuring mid-tempo, piano-driven guitar pop and more serious lyrical content. AnNa R. and Plate met in Berlin in 1990 and began collaborating on music, initially attempting English-language songs before switching to German. Their first concert took place on 4 October 1991. Their debut album, "Soubrette werd' ich nie" (1992), received little commercial attention, followed by "Nur einmal noch" (1994) and "Mittwoch is' er fällig" (1995). In the mid-1990s, they signed with Polydor Records and released "Objekt der Begierde" (1996), "Die Schlampen sind müde" (1997), and "Zucker" (1999), achieving greater chart success. The band also released the song "Ja, ich will" in 1999 in support of same-sex marriage in Germany, featuring a duet with comedian Hella von Sinnen. In the 2000s, Rosenstolz achieved major commercial success. "Kassengift" (2000) was their first album to reach number one on the German albums chart. Subsequent albums included "Macht Liebe" (2002) and "Herz" (2004), both accompanied by extensive concert tours and live recordings. Singles such as "Liebe ist alles", "Ich will mich verlieben", and "Willkommen" reached the top ten in Germany. Later albums included "Das große Leben" (2006), which topped charts in Germany and Austria and sold over one million copies, "Die Suche geht weiter" (2008), and "Wir sind am Leben" (2011), marking the duo's 20th anniversary. Rosenstolz went on an indefinite hiatus at the end of 2012, with Plate pursuing a solo career and AnNa R. joining the band Gleis 8. Rosenstolz's songwriting process generally involved Plate composing the music and the duo co-writing lyrics inspired by life experiences, emotions, and personal observations. Their style evolved over time, with earlier works characterized by playful or experimental elements, and later works focusing on mainstream pop arrangements and more reflective themes.
