About Richard Clarke
Already one of Worcester's most well known singer-songwriters, Rich Clarke had been seeking to broaden his music away from his familiar folk guitar structures, towards something more distinctive. Playing first with drummer Dan Bramhall, then adding bassist Luke Elliott, together they worked towards a modern sound: founded in the limitations of an acoustic trio, but drawing on the rhythms of glitchy electronica, to add something mechanical but played with the warmth and feeling of human musicians. Once the group began recording, song arrangements were woven together with an ear for the delicate and the subtle. Rich's vocals were layered into swooping harmonies. The bass and drums drive, but always framing the voice, not overwhelming it. Often sounds and instruments within the songs are hinted it, rather than stated outright. Treasures and trinkets are buried within the mix, rewarding those who listen to the record repeatedly by drawing them deeper into the music the harder they listen. On the other hand - if a nice tune is what you're after, the songs are founded on pretty melodies and the sweet soulfulness in Rich's voice. This isn't the record to put on at 7pm on Saturday evening as you prepare to head out seeking the night's pleasures. It's the record to put on at 4am Sunday morning as you contemplate falling into bed, with or without a companion. This isn't a party record; this is a hangover record that beguiles and soothes while telling truths about love, life and those we meet. These songs don't arrive at glib, easy conclusions to the questions they pose. Instead, they offer glimpses of something - a suggestion. Did I just hear...? Was that a...?
