About Purrkur Pillnikk

Iceland's Purrkur Pillnikk was perhaps most notable for featuring vocalist Einar Orn and bassist Bragi Olafsson, who went on to much greater fame as founders of The Sugarcubes. Formed in 1981, Purrkur Pillnikk took both their musical style and attitude from arty, cynical English minimalists like Wire and The Fall. Within the seventeen months they were together, the prolific band released two 7" EPs, including their debut, Tilf (recorded a month after forming), and two albums; the first, Ekki Enn, hit the top ten in Iceland in 1981, and was followed the next year by Googooplex, the group's most musically developed record. However, after the English-language No Time to Think EP, Purrkur Pillnikk disbanded. A live album, Maskinan, appeared in 1983. All of the band's releases appeared on Gramm, a label Orn co-founded, and are as such quite rare outside of Iceland.
