About Phumphuang Duangchan

Pumpuang Duangjan (also transliterated as Phumphuang Duangchan; Thai: พุ่มพวง ดวงจันทร์; real name: Ramphueng Chit-han; August 4, 1961 – June 13, 1992) was a popular Thai Luk Thung singer and actress. She was also known by the nickname Pueng (Phueng; Thai: ผึ้ง; meaning "Bee") and the "Queen of Country Music". Active from the late 1970s to the early 1990s she pioneered electronic Luk Thung and is considered one of the most important Luk Thung vocalists in Thailand. The child of poor farmers, Pumpuang had only two years of primary education before her family's plight forced her to take to the fields as a sugar cane cutter. Although illiterate, she was adept at memorising lyrics and successfully participated in many local singing competitions. At age 15, she came to the notice of a visiting band, and from the late 1970s onwards her fame skyrocketed.
