The “ Orquesta Típica Ciudad Baigón” ( Typical Tango Orchestra Ciudad Baigón ) was founded with a concrete purpose and a clear mission : to rescue Tango from the pitiful role it has been playing in popular music these last few years . And to make Tango a new realm in which the present-day intensity and meanderings might be reflected. The orchestra’s current performance style of tango music respects the aim with which it was conceived : an ambitious project to produce new arrangements on old Tango masterpieces, while at the same time creating a new “tango- language” with new compositions of the genre, faithful to the traditional approach of the “Orquesta Típica”. The orchestra has perfomed in varied centres responsible for the widespread of tango, and has given several concerts at : the milonga de la Confitería Ideal; Unitango; Café Tortoni; Canning Hall (milonga Parakultural); Palacio San Miguel; Milonga de los jueves; Centro Cultural Torcuato Tasso and CC de la Cooperación. Furthermore, it has a weekly performance every Sunday at the corner of Carlos Calvo and Defensa streets, standing out as one of the main tourist attractions that have earned the neighbourhood of San Telmo its fame as Tango Centre, both for the quantity and quality of its typical shows.Along its relatively short existence, the orchestra has already accompanied singers of the stature of Omar Mollo. It is also preparing a musical encounter with the successful Uruguayan “murga “, Los Balbis. The “Orquesta Típica Ciudad Baigón” counts among its members : Hernán Cabrera : pianist, conductor and founder of the orchestra, as well as composer of its first original tango : “Permiso”.
