About Ninja Sex Party

Ninja Sex Party (often abbreviated as NSP) is an American musical comedy rock duo consisting of singer Dan Avidan and keyboardist Brian Wecht. They formed in 2009 in New York City and are based in Los Angeles. They are also part of the musical trio Starbomb with collaborator Arin Hanson. The group’s work primarily consists of rock and synth-pop-oriented comedic songs, often addressing themes such as sex, romance, and fantasy. Avidan and Wecht perform as the characters Danny Sexbang and Ninja Brian. Danny Sexbang is portrayed as an exaggerated, hypersexual and often unsuccessful persona, while Ninja Brian is depicted as a silent and violent ninja. The characters form the central narrative element of the band’s music and videos. The duo has released multiple studio albums, including both original material and cover recordings, as well as a remix album, a live album, and a compilation. In addition, they have released several albums as part of Starbomb. Their cover album series "Under the Covers", which began in 2016, marked a shift toward non-comedic performances, featuring interpretations of songs from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. In their early work, Wecht acted as producer and performed most of the instrumentation. From 2015 onward, the duo collaborated with producers including Jim Arsenault and Jim Roach, as well as the band TWRP, which became their backing band for studio recordings and live performances. Both Avidan and Wecht have also appeared in TWRP’s releases. Since 2018, Wecht has performed the character Ninja Brian in a solo live comedy show titled "Ninja Brian’s All-Star Variety Luau Spectacular". Each of the duo’s non-cover studio albums has reached number one on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart, and their releases have also charted on the Billboard 200. Dan Avidan, who had previously performed in bands such as The Northern Hues and Skyhill, conceived the project and was introduced to Brian Wecht through mutual contacts in the New York comedy scene. The band was formed in early 2009, with both members adopting stage personas. The concept was influenced by comedy music acts such as The Lonely Island and Flight of the Conchords, and initially aimed to develop into a sitcom-style project. The duo began performing live in 2009 and participated in various festivals and events. Their early music videos were produced with minimal budgets and were primarily created with the help of collaborators. In 2011, they released their debut album "NSFW", which included both new material and previously released songs. Their second album, "Strawberries and Cream", was released in 2013 and charted on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart. In the same year, they released the single "Party of Three", featuring Arin Hanson, and contributed "Dick Figures: The Movie: The Song" to the soundtrack of "Dick Figures: The Movie". Later that year, Avidan, Wecht, and Hanson formed Starbomb, a side project focused on parody songs about video games. Starbomb’s self-titled debut album reached number one on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart. In 2015, Ninja Sex Party released "Attitude City", which reached number one on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart. Around this time, they began working regularly with TWRP. They also collaborated with the band Steel Panther on multiple occasions and participated in live performances together. In 2016, the duo released "Under the Covers", their first album of cover songs, followed by "Under the Covers, Vol. II" in 2017 and "Under the Covers, Vol. III" in 2019. The first volume achieved chart success across multiple Billboard categories. In 2018, they released the album "Cool Patrol", which reached number one on the Comedy Albums chart and included the song "Danny Don’t You Know". The band also made a televised performance debut with a censored version of the song. In 2019, they released "The Mystic Crystal", one of their longest compositions, and announced their album "The Prophecy", which was released in 2020 and reached number one on the Comedy Albums chart. In 2021, they released "The Very, Very, Very, Very Classy Acoustic Album", an acoustic reinterpretation of previous material, and "Level Up", which also reached number one on the Comedy Albums chart. In 2023 and 2024, the duo released singles including "I Own A Car", "Let’s Save The Earth", and "Galaxy Hamster" in advance of their album "These Nuts", which was released in 2024. That same year, they announced a digital concert event celebrating their 15th anniversary. They also released the compilation album "Masterstrokes: 15 Years of Elegance", which features remastered tracks from across their discography.
