Nils Wogram - trombone; Hayden Chisholm - alto sax and bass; Matt Penman - double bass; Jochen Rückert - drums Nils Wogram is one of the most sought-after trombone players in Germany who blows away all notions of the trombone as a brash, slightly awkward “tailgating” instrument, whether delivering a cascade of impossibly fast 16th notes or stating a melody with sublime lyricism. In Root 70, Nils teams up with three other bandleaders to create a unique fusion of contemporary styles. Saxophonist, didgeridoo and bagpipe player Hayden Chisholm’s influences include Balkan dance music, Australian aboriginal music, west Asian singing, Irish folk and drum and bass. Fellow New Zealander Matt Penman is one of New York’s most in-demand bass players and has worked with Ravi Coltrane, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Joshua Redman among others. A past winner of the European Jazz Competition, at 31 drummer Jochen Rückert already has 25 albums under his belt, playing with the likes of Kenny Werner, Dave Liebman, Marc Copland and John Abercrombie.
