About Nasimiyu
RELEASES A New Orleans transplant since 2009, and originally from the Twin Cities, Nasimiyu has dedicated her debut album to the beautiful southern city which took her in as one of its own, and has had so much influence on her as an artist. "It Ain't Pretty, But it's Beautiful," EP (2010) is a collection of songs inspired by the artist's personal journies in the city of New orleans. In it, she weaves stories of nature overtaking crumbling city structures ("When Autumn Came"), of dancing like you caught the spirit of a swamp thing ("Swamp Foot"), of weary French Quarter hustlers ("Your Way"), of Bourbon Street's true face, behind the scenes ("Bourbon Street Blues"), of witnessing young girls come of age and learn the city's lessons and limits the hard way ("Bayou Black"), and of tarot card readings come true ("Fortune Teller"). The album's dynamic brass-laden basslines and rhythms unfold influence from rich histories of the south's deep musical roots. These songs are a thank-you to the community that contributed so much to the artist's life, musically, and otherwise. SOUND The sound of Nasimiyu's music is comprised of organic instrumentation -- upright bass, guitar, piano, baritone saxophone, and drums, layered with soulful, spunky vocals. The feel is a little vintage, drawing influence from jazz, blues, and motown classics. Meanwhile, it is forward-thinking in its composition, which is innovative and occasionally experimental. BIO Nasimiyu Murumba is a vocalist, composer, dancer, performer currently living in New Orleans. A self-taught musician, she applies her many talents in writing, composing, arranging, and performing all of her own original material. She has pulled from many experiences throughout her life, loves, and travels to develop the original sound she evokes in her music. Nasimiyu started singing and dancing as a baby and has continued to pursue that passion into adulthood. At 23, she feels honored to be able to perform and play music professionally. Nasimiyu graduated from Creative Arts High School in her hometown of Saint Paul, Minnesota, where she immersed herself in the study of dance, theater, poetry, photography, and film. In her spare time she taught herself to play piano and guitar, and began songwriting at an early age. The Twin Cities provided her with many artistic opportunities, including collaborating with many hip hop artists, teaching dance classes, incorporating the arts into many community organizing projects, putting together large-scale concerts, acting in independent films, modeling, and building 3 years of wonderful experiences as a burlesque performer. She went to New Orleans in the summer of 2009 with the intention of visiting for a week, with hopes to learn a bit about its musical and cultural roots. However, she quickly fell in love with the city and has been there ever since, with continued piety in exploring the region's rich history and heritage. As she puts it, "To this day, simply living and breathing in the city of New Orleans is the best music education I've ever had."
