About Tippa Naphtali

Tippa Naphtali was born in Birmingham, West Midlands UK in 1962. He grew up with a family of eight in a deprived area of the city. Having left Birmingham for a life in London he originally embarked on a live poetry career, coached by his acclaimed brother Benjamin Zephaniah. His poetical and musical career lasted from 1985 to 1985 when he gave up this area of work to concentrate on bringing up his young son, and his prolific work in the community. Tippa went on to work with numerous charities in London and the South East of England promoting community development and empowerment of local residents. He worked, directly or indirectly with over 45 charities between 1979 and 2004. In 2004 Tippa returned to his hometown of Birmingham following the death of his cousin in police custody. He established the 4WardEver UK Campaign, which works to provide news, information and events for people affected by deaths in custody. His work has spread internationally to incorporate campaigning on behalf and in support of prison, police, and death row victims in over 12 countries. He also continues to work with charities in the city including the Digbeth Trust, B-Autistic Birmingham and Birmingham Association of Youth Clubs. Tippa has continued to be a champion of social justice and human rights. Who knows, one day he just might channel all that experience back into music again!
