About Felix Mendelssohn
Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, known as Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847), was a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor of the early Romantic period. He was born on 3 February 1809 in Hamburg, Germany, into a prominent Jewish family; his grandfather was the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Recognised as a child prodigy, Mendelssohn’s family encouraged his musical pursuits only after he showed serious dedication to the art. Mendelssohn achieved early success in Germany and later travelled extensively throughout Europe. He was especially well received in Britain, where he worked as a composer, conductor, and soloist. His ten visits to Britain, during which many of his major works premiered, were a significant part of his career. Mendelssohn’s musical style was essentially conservative, distinguishing him from contemporaries such as Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, and Hector Berlioz, who pursued more adventurous approaches. He founded the Leipzig Conservatory, which became known for its traditional and anti-radical stance. His compositions include symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano works, and chamber music. Mendelssohn also played an important role in reviving interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. After a period of diminished reputation due to changing musical tastes and antisemitism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, his originality has been reassessed, and he is now regarded as one of the most popular composers of the Romantic era. Mendelssohn died on 4 November 1847 in Leipzig. --- Another artist named Felix Mendelssohn was a British singer and bandleader active in the 1930s and 1940s. He was known for his interest in Hawaiian music and gained popularity performing as Felix Mendelssohn & His Hawaiian Serenaders.
