About Matías Durango
Matías Durango de los Arcos (Falces, 1636 - Santo Domingo de la Calzada, November 11, 1698) was a Spanish composer and chapel master. Possibly born in Falces, in Navarra , the son of Andrés de Durango and Isabel de los Arcos. Trained in his childhood in León with the teacher Tomás Micieces, he moved with him to the Cathedral of Santa María de Toledo, where he came to appear as chapel teacher, although it seems that he was only temporarily when his teacher had to leave for various reasons (one is the birth of her illegitimate child). In 1662, Durango was documented as chapel master in Tafalla. In 1666 he worked in the Church of the Palace of Logroño as chapel master and two years later he joined the then Collegiate Church of La Redonda , the current co-cathedral, also in Logroño. Previously he had tried to be chapel master at the Cathedral of Lérida , without success and, again, he failed in his attempt to take up the same position at that of El Burgo de Osma. The name of his wife, María de León Asensio, is known from this time, and he had a daughter, María Clara. In the end, in 1686 he joined the Cathedral of Palencia as a harpist, without abandoning his claims to attain a position in one of the cathedrals. In 1687 he returned to his birthplace, Falces, as a teacher in his collegiate church to finally obtain in 1695 the position of teacher in the Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada in 1695, replacing Mateo de Prado Casanova , a position he held until his death. By 1695 he must have been widowed and ordained a priest. His works are preserved in the Cathedral of Logroño , that of Santo Domingo de la Calzada —the majority—, El Escorial and Bogotá (Colombia) .
