About José Lillo Alfonso
José Lillo Alfonso (Alicante, ? - Sigüenza, November 6, 1684) was a Spanish composer and maestro de capilla. After the retirement or death of Jusepe Alcalá in 1675, oppositions were organized to fill the vacancy of chapel master of theCathedral of Teruel. The oppositions were held on August 2, 1675 and participated by Lillo and Miguel Durón, from Cuenca, a student of Alonso Xuárez and half-brother of the famousSebastián Durón. Despite facing a candidate as strong as Miguel Durón, on September 6 the Cabildo of Teruel gave Lillo as the winner in a vote that won ten to two. I would stay inTeruel nine years, until 1684, when he applied for the competitions for the master's degree in the Cathedral of Sigüenza. After the position of maestro Benito de Ambrona became vacant, oppositions were organized to which seven candidates were presented. Lillo was chosen as a teacher of Sigüenza on February 18, 1684, leaving together with Pedro Herrero, the contralto of the Cathedral of Teruel. After his departure, Miguel Durón, the loser of the previous oppositions that was in Gran Canaria, was called, possibly influenced by the fame of his half-brother, Sebastián Durón. It is not known that he went to Teruel. Indirectly, it is known that Jacinto Escobar held the vacant position in Teruel. He would not remain in the position for more than eight months, since he soon fell ill and died on October 6, 1684. Lillo left twelve compositions in the Cathedral of Teruel. In the Cathedral of Albarracín an incomplete mass is preserved. In Sigüenza he left about thirty polyphonic works, however, only two are preserved. There are also his compositions in Segorbe, Valencia and the Corpus Christi College of Valencia.
