About María Teresa Vera

(Guanajay, 1895 – Havana, 1965) was a Cuban singer-songwriter. She started her career as a singer in 1911 in a theatre. Her friend, the trovador Manuel Corona used to give some advice to her and taught her to play guitar. She sang in the band Grupo Típico with Carlos Godinez. She met Ignacio Piñeiro, who taught her to play double bass. Follower of Afro-Cuban Santería, she later left music to become a Santa. And in 1936, she appeared for only one broadcasting in a Radio Salas program with a quartet (Justa García, Dominica Verges and Lorenzo Hierrezuelo). She later joined Hierrezuelo in a duet and she was accoladed as one of the most important singers of la Trova with this duet which lasted for more than 20 years One of her most remarkable compositions, "Veinte años" have been performanced by several Cuban singers. In the 1950s, she appeared in the TV program "El Casino de la Alegría" and in the 1960s she received several tributes.
