Marco Beltrami (born October 7, 1966) is an American composer and conductor known for his work in film and television scores. He has composed music across various genres, including horror, action, science fiction, Western, and superhero films. Notable projects include the Scream series, Mimic, The Faculty, Resident Evil, A Quiet Place, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Live Free or Die Hard, World War Z, I, Robot, Snowpiercer, 3:10 to Yuma, Jonah Hex, The Homesman, Hellboy, The Wolverine, and Logan. Beltrami frequently collaborated with director Wes Craven, scoring seven of his films, including all four entries in the Scream franchise from 1996 to 2011. He has also worked with directors such as James Mangold, Guillermo del Toro, Tommy Lee Jones, Alex Proyas, Len Wiseman, John Moore, Jonathan Levine, and John Krasinski. He has received two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score for the films "3:10 to Yuma" (2007) and "The Hurt Locker" (2008), and a Golden Globe nomination for "A Quiet Place" (2018). Beltrami won a Satellite Award for Best Original Score for "Soul Surfer" (2011). Born on Long Island, New York, Beltrami is of Italian and Greek descent. He attended Ward Melville High School before graduating from Brown University. He furthered his studies at the Yale School of Music and the USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, where he studied under composer Jerry Goldsmith. Beltrami’s first feature film score was for the 1994 thriller "Death Match," directed by Joe Coppolletta. He gained broader recognition with the score for Wes Craven’s "Scream" (1996). His career includes scores for horror and thriller films such as "Mimic" (1997), "The Faculty" (1998), "Angel Eyes" (2001), "Joy Ride" (2001), "Resident Evil" (2002, co-composed with Marilyn Manson), "Blade II" (2002), "Hellboy" (2004), "I, Robot" (2004), and "Red Eye" (2005). He has also composed for independent films such as "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" and Tommy Lee Jones' "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada." In 1998, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for his score for the film "David and Lisa." Beltrami composed the scores for "Live Free or Die Hard" (2007) and "A Good Day to Die Hard" (2013), continuing the Die Hard series after Michael Kamen’s death. He was nominated for an Academy Award for "3:10 to Yuma" (2007) and, along with Buck Sanders, for "The Hurt Locker" (2008). His score for "Soul Surfer" (2011) received critical acclaim and earned him a Satellite Award. He composed the soundtrack for the spy film "November Man" (2014) and co-composed the score for the 2015 "Fantastic Four" film with Philip Glass. Beltrami’s compositional style often features highly percussive textures, combining traditional percussion instruments such as bass drums with violins and brass to create layered hits and stabs.
