About Main Concept
Main Concept is a hip-hop group from Munich, Germany, currently consisting of three members. The group was founded in 1990 by David Pe, DJ Explizit, and Human D (then known as Glammerlicious). They initially gained popularity on regional stages and at various rap jams. In 1991, David Pe began writing and performing his lyrics in German, which was uncommon at the time. From the start, Main Concept focused on politically and socially conscious lyrics, leading to collaborations with the Heidelberg-based rap group Advanced Chemistry. Their 1992 performance with Advanced Chemistry, Aquarius Answer, and the Crazy Force Crew marked their breakthrough beyond Munich. In 1993, Main Concept released their first single, "So hat das Volk den Verstand verloren," on the indie label Move Records. Their debut album, "Coole Scheiße," followed in 1994, coinciding with the "Klasse von ’94" tour alongside Absoluten Beginnern and MC Rene, which continued in 1995 as the "Klasse von ’95" tour with additional musicians. The album included the track "Zwischen den Stühlen," contributing to a debate sparked by Advanced Chemistry’s song "Fremd im eigenen Land." During this period, Main Concept became a central part of Munich’s hip-hop scene, regularly organizing jams at the Muffathalle featuring both international acts—such as DV alias Khrist, Missin Linx, Al Tariq, Problemz, and Get Open—and German groups, alongside graffiti artists like Seen, Ces, and Mode 2. After releasing the single "Generation X / 58 GPR," the group left Move Records. Their second album, "Genesis Exodus Main Concept," was released on the indie label Deck8 and highlighted the group’s growing skills in freestyle and production, particularly by David Pe, Glammerlicious, and DJ Explizit. The Bambule tour with Absoluten Beginner further solidified their reputation. In 1998, the group founded their own independent label, 58 Beats, named after David Pe’s “mythical number.” The label’s first release featured New York MC Problemz. Subsequent maxi-singles included collaborations with Raptile, DV alias Khrist, Retsam, Samy Deluxe, and Siba Giba. In 1999, they released a freestyle-only maxi-single with Blumentopf, which paved the way for the fully freestyle album "Plan 58," featuring contributions from Samy Deluxe, Blumentopf, and Flowin Immo. In 2003, Main Concept returned with an internationally enhanced EP including Looptroop and Get Open. The 2005 album "Equilibrium," released on the Hamburg label Buback, featured Eizi Eiz, Denyo, Heinemann, Kung Schu, Holunder from Blumentopf, Freez, Esther, Vier zu Eins, and Black Tiger. Following this period, Main Concept remained active but largely absent from the public eye for ten years. During this time, David Pe completed his medical studies and now works as a general practitioner, while DJ Explizit continued performing as a DJ and Glammerlicious pursued music production. The group returned to live performance in 2013 as the opening act for Die Orsons. In 2015, to mark their 25th anniversary, Main Concept released the album "Hier und jetzt" on Buback, reaching number 55 on the German charts. The album featured longtime collaborators including Samy Deluxe, Eizi Eiz (Jan Delay), Denyo, Blumentopf, MC Rene, and Flowin Immo.
