About Local Heroes SW9
Local Heroes SW9 was a band put together by Charlie Gillet and the good people @ Oval Records to showcase the talents of Kevin Armstrong. This shouldn't suggest that the others in the three-piece were make-weights; no way. Aside from Armstrong the band featured Kim Barti, an excellent drummer whose singular style drove the band on the more up moments but also provided some fantastic scattergun that backed up some of the almost dub-like more off-beat stuff. On bass was Matt Seligman a one-time Thompson Twin (when they were good in the very early 'Participation' days long before they became an embarrassment). They made just 1 and a half albums - 'Drip Dry Zone' and 'New Opium'. The latter shared an album - the other side being Armstrong's own 'How The West Was Won'. Armstrong himself had periods with The Passions (who covered Local Heroes' 'Love Is Essentail') and memorably played guitar with Bowie @ Live Aid and is still producing. A very significant talent.
