About Lional
Lional were an alternative rock band from Inverness, consisting of Joshua MacKenzie on vocals and guitar, Ross Haddow on bass, Russell Montgomery on drums and Gordon McKerrow on keyboards. Initally forming as a three-piece in 2011 under the name 'Lionel' with Sean Phlegming on drums, the band built up a reputation across the country via strong live shows, eventually being dubbed the best unsigned band at the 2014 goNORTH festival. They independently released their debut EP My Design in early 2015. Season of Salt was released later that year on Iain McLaughlin's IMOUT Records to critical acclaim, being featured at #11 of The Herald Scotland's Top 100 Scottish songs of 2015 list. The band has played at various music expo events around the world, such as California's MUSEXPO 2016, Sweden's Live at Heart and The Netherlands' Freezefest. The band released a string of singles through 2016 to 2019, before releasing Sadlad in 2021. Joshua McKenzie has gone on to form the synthpop project The Joshua Hotel. Gordon McKerrow formed the electronica three-piece band The Dazed Digital Age in 2018. Russell Montgomery has also played in Iain Mclaughlin & The Outsiders, The Collective and Ketimine Deco. On February 5th 2024, the band announced an indefinite hiatus. They played their final show at Upstairs, Inverness on April 6th.
