LIBAR
About LIBAR
Founded in the city of Split, Croatia in 2007, the band LIBAR (local word for THE BOOK) has won the audience from the beginning; their shows were sold out from their very start. Taking a basic form of traditional “klapa music” (a cappella male multi-part singing, in a special traditional way, typical for Dalmatia region in Croatia) and accompanying it with standard rock band set-up, they have brought new and fresh readings of domestic and international hit songs. They released their first album in spring 2008, titled “Libar Prvi” (Libar, the 1st), successfully combining acoustic rock and ‘klapa’ way of singing. Twelve cover songs are clearly showing the way which band choose as uniquely their own – they “heretically” dismissed canons of traditional singing, moving artistic borders onward and erasing them with modern and progressive approach to autochthonic values, also breaking up language and style barriers in the process. The album has won public and critics’ acclamation and won international discography award ‘Indexi’ in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina for best ethno-fusion album in region in 2009. During that year, with few line-up changes and new creative forces in the band, LIBAR announced heavier, r’n’r approach to covering songs, playing some of Croatian evergreens in heavy-metal manner, and also filling up their repertoire covering songs by Talking Heads, R.E.M., Peter Gabriel, Muse, RHCP, Depeche Mode and others in the same style, while their concerts have transformed from acoustic sets into hard-boiled rock shows. With their first original song ‘Dite’ (The Child), LIBAR has won three awards at Chansons Festival 2010 in Sibenik, Croatia: best newcomer, best lyrics and 3rd award for best song voted by the audience. The song soon became hit-single and was released as EP with several alternative versions and remixes. It also got its visual form as band’s first video clip. During 2011 they’ve released two more singles: 'Kukalo' (Hide-and-Seek) and 'Glasnije' (Louder), which recently got extraordinary video clip, instantly acclaimed by audience. Both songs are love songs and both became club and live hits, thanks to guitar combination of power-pop and alter-rock, with groovy beats and dance sequences. At the moment, LIBAR is releasing their second album, this time completely with their original songs, in cooperation with crème-de-la-crème of Croatian music and creative arts forces, including underground scene. Their new songs are moving away from any local idioms, getting close to international mainstream by style, sound and production. In the same time, playing live continuously, on numerous, attractive and sold-out concerts, they thrill the audience wherever they perform, from small clubs to large venues and from concert halls to festivals. Their characteristic combination of hard rock music with vocals leaned to traditional male choir singing allows them to play international and domestic hit songs in unique way and able to perform any genre, from dance pop to progressive heavy sound.
