About Les Rallizes Denudes
Les Rallizes Dénudés was a Japanese psychedelic / noise rock band formed in 1967 by a group of students from the Music Club at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. The band existed until 1996, with Takashi Mizutani as the only consistent member and the core of the lineup. Although they initially planned to record in the studio, dissatisfaction with the results led the group to focus exclusively on live performances. The band was active in two main periods: from 1967 to 1988 and briefly from 1993 to 1996. Their musical style evolved considerably over time, influenced by artists such as Blue Cheer, Captain Beefheart, The Velvet Underground, and French chanson singers like Antoine. These influences shaped the band’s early sound, especially in the late '60s and early '70s. During the '70s and '80s, the band’s sound became increasingly distorted, repetitive, loud, and raw, reminiscent of albums like White Light/White Heat by The Velvet Underground. The band's discography is composed primarily of live recordings, bootlegs, soundboard tapes, and some abandoned studio recording attempts. Official releases during the band's active years were minimal. Some significant archive releases include: '77 LIVE (1991, Rivista) '67-'69 STUDIO et LIVE (1991, Rivista) MIZUTANI / Les Rallizes Dénudés (1991, Rivista) Jittoku '76 (2025, Rivista) Citta Club '93 (2023, Rivista) DIsque 4 - '76 Studio et Live (2026, Rivista) A self-titled 7" single, released as a bonus with Etcetera magazine (1996) A self-titled VHS compilation of live performances, produced by the mysterious "Ethan Mousiké" These releases are among the few considered official by the band's archive. Takashi Mizutani, the enigmatic founder and vocalist of the group, remains a mysterious figure. Little is known about his life, except for his early connection with members of the Japanese Red Army and his initial work in theater at Doshisha University. Mizutani had a deep affection for French poetry and cinema, which influenced his songwriting and creative direction. His lyrics often revolved around poetry and literature. There are unconfirmed reports that Mizutani lived in Paris between 1988 and 1993, although this claim lacks verification. After the hijacking of Flight 351, Mizutani became reclusive, making only occasional appearances for shows and interviews. However, music magazines of the time occasionally reported on his performances and festival appearances. The last Les Rallizes Dénudés concert took place at Club Citta in Tokyo, on October 4, 1996. Mizutani’s final public appearances were two solo live performances in 1997, with jazz saxophonist Arthur Doyle and drummer Sabu Toyozumi. Mizutani was reported to have passed away in 2019, according to friends and former colleagues.
