About Leatherwolf

Leatherwolf is an American heavy metal band formed in Huntington Beach, California in 1981. They initially split up in 1992 but reunited in 1999. The band is sometimes referred to as the "Triple Axe Attack" due to its use of a three-guitar lineup. As of 2022, the group consists of lead vocalist Keith Adamiak, guitarists Rob Math and Luke Man, bassist Barry Sparks, and drummer Dean Roberts. Leatherwolf has released six studio albums and undergone numerous lineup changes, with no member remaining constant throughout its history. The band continues to perform live and released the album "Kill the Hunted" in 2022. Leatherwolf formed in the early 1980s and performed alongside metal acts such as Metallica, Witch, and Slayer in Southern California venues. The first lineup included Punky Peru on drums, Jerome Sevron on bass, Scott Moore and Geoff Gayer on guitars, and Carl Detkin on vocals, but this lineup was short-lived. By 1983, Michael Olivieri had replaced Detkin on vocals, and the band included Dean Roberts on drums, Carey Howe on guitar, and Matt Hurich on bass. Their early demo led to a contract with Tropical Records, which produced a five-song EP in 1984. The EP was released as a full album by Steamhammer/SPV in 1985 under the title "Leatherwolf" and in the UK as "Endangered Species." In 1986, Matt Hurich left the band and was replaced by Paul Carman. Leatherwolf signed with Island Records and released another self-titled album in 1987, produced by Kevin Beamish. Singles from this album included "The Calling" and "Cry Out," the latter featuring a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising." Their 1989 album "Street Ready," produced by Beamish and mixed by Michael Wagener, marked a return to a heavier sound. Songs from this album included "Hideaway," "Wicked Ways," "Too Much," and the instrumental "Black Knight." The band made its European live debut in 1989, performing at Aardschokdag in the Netherlands and opening for Vow Wow and Zed Yago. Following internal changes and lineup shifts, Leatherwolf adopted the name Hail Mary in 1992 and disbanded during the recording of an album amid the rise of grunge rock. The original "Leatherwolf" album was reissued on CD in 1991. Leatherwolf reunited in 1999 with a performance at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana, California, documented on the live album "Wide Open," which included a cover of the Doors' "Break On Through." The band returned to Europe for a performance at Wacken Open Air in Germany. Vocalist Michael Olivieri departed in 2003, and the band recorded a three-song demo with Jeff Martin from Racer X, though he did not join full-time. Wade Black later became the vocalist for the album "World Asylum," released in 2006, with contributions from Carey Howe, Paul Carman, Pete Perez, Mark Smith, and Eric Halpern. Leatherwolf played the Bang Your Head!!! festival and released a promotional video for "Behind the Gun." Patrick Guyton replaced Carman on bass for the ProgPower USA festival later that year. Original members Carey Howe and Michael Olivieri returned in 2007, and the band reissued "World Asylum" as "New World Asylum," featuring Olivieri's vocals. A European tour included a headline appearance at Germany's Keep It True festival. Geoff Gayer left the band at the end of the tour and was replaced by Greg Erba, with whom they recorded a video for "Dr. Wicked (Rx O.D.)," later included in "Monsters of Metal Vol. 6." Leatherwolf shared bills with Anthrax, Saxon, Overkill, Anvil, and Metal Church at Rocklahoma in 2009. "Unchained Live," the first album to feature guitarists Rob Math and Greg Erba, was released in 2013. Former members Howe, Gayer, and Black later worked on an album under the name Haunt of Jackals, releasing "The Chosen" in 2017. In 2017, guitarist Joey Tafolla joined Leatherwolf but left six months later and was replaced by Luke Man for a UK tour. The band performed in Southern California later that year. In 2019, Michael Olivieri departed, and Keith Adamiak was introduced as the new lead vocalist, with the return of Geoff Gayer and Paul Carman. The band previewed the song "The Henchman" from an upcoming studio album. In 2022, Leatherwolf performed at the M3 Festival with a lineup including Wayne Findlay and Brice Snyder, and released the album "Kill the Hunted," supported by promotional videos for "Hit the Dirt," "The Henchman," and the title track. A vinyl edition of "Kill the Hunted," including the bonus track "Thunder (MMXXII)," was released in August 2023, accompanied by a headline show at the Whisky A Go-Go in Hollywood, California.
