About Larry's Rebels
Larry's Rebels were among the most important and successful rock and pop bands in New Zealand during the 1960s. The band formed in 1964 in Ponsonby, Auckland (originally as an instrumental band in 1962). They combined British beat music, American garage rock, and psychedelic influences into an energetic sound that made them national stars. The band was so popular in New Zealand that they were often referred to as "New Zealand's Animals"—a reference to their raw, bluesy sound and high-energy live shows. The band began as a purely instrumental group, inspired by surf and beat music. With the addition of Larry Morris, the band gained a vocalist and developed its distinctive sound. Larry's Rebels were one of the first New Zealand bands to cultivate a professional pop image. They were considered an extremely energetic live band, with Morris as a charismatic frontman and John Williams' distinctive guitar playing. They were a constant presence on radio, TV, and in youth magazines, and shaped New Zealand's pop culture in the second half of the 1960s. Extensive tours throughout New Zealand and Australia made them one of the most-watched live bands in the country. They had several Top 10 hits in both countries. Their image: young, wild, fashionable – perfect for 1960s pop culture. From 1967 onward, they experimented more with psychedelic pop, which was also reflected in their only studio album, "A Study in Black" (1967). The enormous pressure, constant touring, and internal tensions led to burnout. Larry Morris left the band in 1969 to pursue a solo career. The remaining members continued as The Rebels but disbanded in 1970. Larry's Rebels are now considered one of the most important bands in New Zealand music history. They were inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. The members were: Larry Morris – vocals John Williams – lead guitar Terry Rouse – keyboards Viv McCarthy – bass Dennis “Nooky” Stott – drums
