About Kike Pinto
Born in 1956 in Lima, from a migrant family from the southern and central regions of the Peruvian Andes. Musician, composer, singer-songwriter, performer, musicologist, researcher and teacher since 1972. He studied composition at the National Conservatory of Music. Creator and director of the TAKI Museum, the first and only museum of Andean and Amazonian musical instruments in Peru, with more than 400 indigenous and mestizo musical instruments in its collection and an archive of field recordings as well as ethnomusicological and ethnographic information of incalculable value and demonstrations, conferences and live recitals with many of these instruments. Since 1974 Kike Pinto starts collecting traditional Andean and Amazonian musical instruments from the native villages and communities of Peru and other Andean and Amazonian countries. He visits villages, towns and communities, contacts musicians and makers, participates in celebrations, festivities and traditional ceremonies and obtains a large number of musical instruments. He records traditional music, interviews and learns to play a number of instruments himself. He learns not only about the music but also about its cultural and ritual context. Organises temporary exhibitions of his collection in Lima and other cities in Peru. Founder of the Andean-Amazonian Institute and Cultural Centre of Culture and Social Development TAKI, which includes the areas of Education, Cultural Promotion, Traditional Medicine and Human and Social Development. As a composer and singer-songwriter he has created songs in popular genres as well as music for cinema, videos, theatre, for children and others. As a teacher he has been co-founder of the Qantu Cultural Association and author of music and arrangements for the Suzuki Association of Peru and the American Suzuki Association and teacher in various educational centres and lecturer at universities and other institutions. Advisor and counsellor of the Escuela Nacional Superior de Folklore José María Arguedas. Author and producer of several articles in important media of the country and abroad as well as of the CDs Wifala and Haylli, as a soloist and many others with different musical groups. He has travelled around his country and several other countries on artistic and cultural tours. Honorary member of the Community of San Pedro de Casta, Huarochirí, Lima, Meseta de Markawasi. Cultural advisor to the Yanaruma Annex of the Japu Community, Quero Nation, Cusco. Recently, Kike Pinto has organised temporary exhibitions at the Escuela Nacional de Folklore José María Arguedas, the Museo Nacional de Arqueología, Antropología e Historia del Perú and the Conservatorio Nacional de Música. Currently, he lives in Lima and shows his collection in TV programmes and organises conferences, master classes, concerts, demonstrations, recitals, with authentic ethnic music, for schools, universities, students, teachers, tourist agencies and the general public.
