About Keith Tinman

Keith Tinman is a British composer born in 1966. He is known for his work in video game music, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s, and was associated with several companies including Ocean Software. Tinman began creating music as a hobbyist, performing compositions on a Roland SH-101 analog synthesizer and recording them on tape. His professional career in video game music started in 1984, when his brother Robert Tinman, a programmer at Thor Computer Software, recommended him to his employer. Around 1988, Tinman joined Ocean Software, where he worked until March 1997. He subsequently worked at Infogrames until March 1999, followed by a period at Computer Artworks until 2003. From 2004 to 2009, he was employed by Reelsound. He later worked at Pinewood Shepperton before establishing his own freelance business, continuing to compose music for video games. Tinman composed for multiple platforms and used a range of audio development tools. On the Amiga, he used a Roland D-10 digital synthesizer in combination with the Pro Sound Sampler. For the Commodore 64, he initially worked with a driver developed by Fred Gray at Thor Computer Software, later using Electrosound 64 with a piano-style keyboard overlay. During his time at Ocean Software, he used sound drivers developed by Paul Hughes and Jonathan Dunn. On the Nintendo Entertainment System, he used Music Driver V1.0, designed by Jonathan Dunn. For the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, he used sound drivers developed by Jonathan Dunn and Bobby Earl. Tinman has cited composers Fred Gray and Rob Hubbard as influences, noting particular appreciation for their work on "Mutants" and "Commando" for the Commodore 64. Among his own compositions, he has identified "Hypa-Ball", "Scary Monsters", and "Cabal" for the Commodore 64 as personal favorites.
