About Karen Olivo

Olivo is of Puerto Rican and Chinese descent. They were raised in Lakeland, Florida. They attended the Lois Cole Harrison School of the Arts. Karen Olivo is a stage and television actor, who is known for originating the role of Vanessa in the Tony Award–winning musical In the Heights both on and off Broadway. They won their first Tony Award for their performance as Anita (2009-2010) in the revival of West Side Story on Broadway. They were also nominated for both a Drama Desk and an Outer Critic's Circle Award for their critically acclaimed performance as Anita. They earned their second Astaire Award nomination for Best Female Dancer for their performance in West Side Story, after previously winning the same award in 2008 for their performance in In the Heights. Olivo originated the role of Satine in the Broadway adaptation of Moulin Rouge! in 2019 and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. In 2021, they announced they were leaving Broadway as a protest for the industry's silence on producer Scott Rudin. That same year they came out as non-binary and announced they used they/them pronouns.
