About Kettcar
Kettcar is a German indie rock band based in Hamburg. The band was formed in 2001 and has released five studio albums. Their fourth album, "Zwischen den Runden", was released in 2012, followed by their fifth album, "Ich vs. Wir", in October 2017. The band name is derived from the Kettcar, a ride-on toy produced by Kettler since 1962. The band was founded by Marcus Wiebusch of ...But Alive and bassist Reimer Bustorff, both of whom had also been members of the ska band Rantanplan. Seeking to move away from the stylistic conventions of punk and ska, they aimed to develop a more restrained and personal musical approach. They were joined by Erik Langer on guitar, Frank Tirado-Rosales on percussion, also a former member of ...But Alive, and Lars Wiebusch on keyboards. Together, they formed Kettcar to explore a different sound and focus on more personal themes in their lyrics. After being unable to secure a record label for their debut album, "Du und wieviel von deinen Freunden", Wiebusch and Bustorff collaborated with Tomte frontman Thees Uhlmann to establish the independent label Grand Hotel van Cleef. The album title references a line from the 1985 film "The Breakfast Club". Released in early 2002, the album was the first issued by the new label and achieved moderate commercial success, drawing attention within the German music press. In March 2005, the band released their second album, "Von Spatzen und Tauben, Dächern und Händen", which reached number five on the German album charts. The album title is a variation on a German proverb comparable to the English saying "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". Kettcar released their third album, "Sylt", named after the German North Sea island, in April 2008. It debuted at number five on the German album charts. In August 2008, the band performed an acoustic concert at Kampnagel in Hamburg, accompanied by a string quartet. This concept was expanded in November 2009, when the band played six concerts supported by the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt. A recording from a performance at the Fliegende Bauten theatre was released in January 2010 as a self-titled live album. In June 2010, Frank Tirado-Rosales left the band to pursue other projects and was replaced by Christian Hake, who had previously worked with Home of the Lame and Olli Schulz. On 10 February 2012, Kettcar released their fourth studio album, "Zwischen den Runden". The band went on hiatus from April 2013 until July 2017. In August 2017, they released their first new single in five years, "Sommer '89 (Er schnitt Löcher in den Zaun)". The song depicts an escape from the German Democratic Republic and has been interpreted as commenting on contemporary migration issues in Europe. Their fifth album, "Ich vs. Wir", was released on 13 October 2017. Kettcar’s music is commonly classified as indie rock or indie pop and is often associated with the Hamburger Schule movement. Members of the band have described their style in varying terms, with Marcus Wiebusch emphasizing Hamburg as a geographical rather than stylistic origin and Reimer Bustorff characterizing their music as guitar pop. Later releases, particularly "Zwischen den Runden", incorporated additional instrumentation such as strings, wind instruments, and piano.
