About Julie Dawn

She was born Juliana Rosalba Maria Theresa Mostosi on August 2nd 1920,in London, England, dying 7th?June 2000 at the age of 79. Her father was head waiter at the Savoy , and as a child she studied piano and music., deciding on a singing career in the 1930s. Singing as Juliana Mostosi she was booked at the then famous Quaglinos Restaurant , Piccadilly London, performing with Alf Van Straten and his music. Changing name to Julie Dawn, she made her first record that year, and her radio debut at BBC Bristol, with the Billy Ternent Sweet Rhythm Orchestra. She went on to sing with some of the best known dance bands of the 1940s, including those of Geraldo and Carroll Gibbons. Wartime brought some problems, because her parents were interned as they were Italian citizens still, altho she and her brother Ubaldo were both born in England. Continuing to sing and perform, and record with bands such as Harry Roy's and Eric Winstone her success continued. Ubaldo became a violinist in the Mantovani Orchestra. She was much in demand on the variety circuit, including the Embassy Club and the Copacabana, and for 2 years at the Celebrity Club in Bond Street. Soon she had nearly two years with the BBC Show Band, under Cyril Stapleton, making three two hour broadcasts each week. She also featured on the Goon Show in the early 1950s. A career change came when Radio 2 gave her a twice weekly slot, which lasted 5 years. She also guested on other radio shows. In 1977 she had a radio show broadcasting 3 times a week, aimed at listeners who lived alone. It aimed to put such persons in touch with others in similar circumstances, with her reading out some of their letters, which came in in excess of 1,000 a week, and once a week she sang, with a backing quartet, for the audience. Known as Julie Dawn's Penfriend Programme it ran for 10 years. Her soothing voice and sympathetic approach made the programme popular. Twice married , she outlived both her husbands.
