About Johann Evangelist Brandl
Johann Evangelist Brandl (14 November 1760 – 25/26 May 1837) was a German composer, violinist, and music director whose career moved from monastic education into court and ecclesiastical musical administration in southwest German lands, culminating in long service in Karlsruhe. Born at Kloster Rohr near Regensburg, he received his earliest training there and continued musical formation in Munich as a chorister, before further study at Neuburg an der Donau and composition instruction in Eichstätt. A short-lived attempt at monastic life at Holy Cross Monastery in Donauwörth ended when he concluded he was unsuited to it, after which he pursued a professional life as a performing violinist and composer. In the mid-1780s he entered court employment as Kapellmeister to Prince Hohenlohe-Bartenstein, and by 1789 he is described as music director in the service of the Bishop of Bruchsal, situating him within the courtly–ecclesiastical network that supported professional musicians in the late eighteenth century. From 1806 he worked in Karlsruhe as music director for the Grand Duke of Baden, remaining there for the rest of his life. His output, as represented in modern catalogues and surviving repertory, spans stage-related items and substantial instrumental and vocal writing—concertos, chamber works, and sacred music among them—reflecting the broad functional demands placed on a court Kapellmeister and music director of his period.
