Johann Schneider

About Johann Schneider

Johann Schneider (1702–1788) was a German organist and composer, born in Oberlauter and active in Leipzig. He studied with Johann Sebastian Bach and, from 1729, served as organist of Leipzig’s Nikolaikirche, a post he is specifically recorded as holding in Bach digital. Schneider’s surviving music is chiefly known through manuscript transmission, including the Berlin Staatsbibliothek source D-B Mus.ms. 30377. Among the works securely identifiable in public catalogues are two organ chorale preludes on Vater unser im Himmelreich (IJS 1 and IJS 2), which remain points of entry into his output today.
