About 20 For 7

:: 20for7:: Since the musically pioneering days of Minton’s 52nd St club in New York in the 50s, where jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis were made and inspired, improvisation has remained an important part of musical progression. In keeping with this tradition 20for7 combine their accumulated musical passion with the modern rhythms, melodies, timbre and beats from the current generation of house music. 20for7 perform a dynamic blend of upfront house rhythms with improvised jazz and funk related melodies, seamlessly blending with in-house DJs and live musicians drawing comparisons to the Nuyorican Soul collective that was put together by house legends, Kenny Dope and Louie Vega. The result is a performance that is completely entwined with the dance floor. The replacement of the drum kit with Basek’s beats gives 20for7 a new medium with which to improvise their way through scales and moods. After one year of the ‘My Bar’ residency, Basek and the group were approached by US house legends Halo & Hipp-e to collaborate and record the debut H-foundation album for seminal Scottish label Soma. The album was called Environments and was heralded by International DJ magazine as a landmark release. In Late 2004 20for7 released their first studio single ‘everything’ with a remix by Joey Youngman on EQltd. The second single 'friday' was recorded with Fred Everything featuring a remix by Trentemoller, and is to be released on Fred’s new Lazy Days imprint, while the third single ‘Ripple Effect’ looks set to be released on French label Chocoflash. Now, four years on with more experience under their belt 20for7 continue their Friday night excursions, constantly reprogramming and adapting their sound. Performing together each week the group has been able to continually explore the original concept for the band to its fullest, learning each player’s space and pushing their musical skills towards the limit. Collective members: Caroline Sommers (Vocals). Caroline was introduced to the band after she got up on the mic at a junkbeats sunday session gig in Byron Bay. Her voice and improvisation skills caught the attention of the lads and after Caroline returned from the UK she joined the collective. The first artist signed to the mad professor’s Ariwa label, Her voice smoothly enhances a broad range of styles. Dave Basek (Beats and Dub). Dave has been involved in the electronic music scene for a decade. Moving from instrumental performance to DJing, it wasn’t long before he decided to explore the possibilities of live adaptation of electronic sequenced music. Using an array of drum machines and groove boxes, Basek arrived at his current set up that allows the freedom of live performance with the control of a live drummer. Andrew Szumouski (Rhodes & Synths) Andrew has been playing the Rhodes longer than even he can remember. Curently working on a number of music projects and studios Andrew is also a sort after session player with a Skank that gives you motion and Pads that sweep the melodies around. Andrew has become an essential element of the 20for7 sound. Shan Sol R (Guitar & Vox) With a performance that oozes talent and warmth Shan leads the group singing, speaking, playing and bring awesome vibes to the stage. As the Driving force behind Brisbane legends Afrodizziact, Shan has extensive experience and endless positive soul to contibute. Simon Baker (Bass) Simon started playing bass guitar at 6 and after a few years he progressed to studying bass at Southern Cross University where he then branched out into music production. Soon after this Baker met Jim polar and Basek and joined them in various projects both in the studio and for live performances. Simons bass lines are the legs of the 20for7 sound his lines are smooth and his tone is heavy, that’s why we call him boot-c. Collective Guests: Slade Gibson (Lavash, Savage Garden) Coco Bootae (Dynamic of Rapture) Camron Brown (Zephyr Timbre) Mark Spencer (sax.com.au) Tiffany Judge (vox) Brooke lindsay (vox) Venesa Baker (vox) Matt Murphy (keys) Kintsho (percussion) Renae Simone (vox) Jimi Polar (rhodes and synth) Ant Aggs (keys) Nick Aggs (Sax Keys) “when in Australia a friend played them a CD of the 20 for 7 collective. Thinking it was a DJ mix they were pretty impressed. When told it was a live recording they were knocked over. “They’re a freeform, house jazz fusion band” explains Hipp-e, “They play in a jazz way where they only do on-the-fly improvisations. They never pre-arrange anything or rehearse sets. They never do the same thing twice. But they give each other so much faith and they’ve been playing together for so long they know how to give each other space. It clicked for us. Finally we knew what it was we’d been looking for.” Interview with DJ Hipp-e from H-foundation:: djmag march 03 no.36vol.3 For bookings contact junkbeats: 20for7@junkbeats.com Phone: +61(0)405 143 865
