Jerrald King Goldsmith (February 10, 1929 Los Angeles, CA, USA, – July 21, 2004 Beverly Hills, CA, USA) was an American composer, conductor, and orchestrator known for his work in film and television scoring over nearly five decades, from 1954 to 2003. He composed music for more than 200 productions and was recognised as one of the most innovative and influential figures in film music. Goldsmith received eighteen Academy Award nominations, winning in 1977 for his score for "The Omen". He was also nominated for six Grammy Awards, five Primetime Emmy Awards, nine Golden Globe Awards, and four British Academy Film Awards. His notable film scores include contributions to five entries in the Star Trek franchise and three in the Rambo series. Other prominent films he scored include "Logan's Run", "Planet of the Apes", "Tora! Tora! Tora!", "Patton", "Papillon", "Chinatown", "Alien", "Poltergeist", "The Secret of NIMH", "Medicine Man", "Gremlins", "Hoosiers", "Total Recall", "Basic Instinct", "Air Force One", "L.A. Confidential", "Mulan", and "The Mummy". Goldsmith also composed the fanfare for the Universal Pictures logo, first heard in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park". Throughout his career, Goldsmith collaborated with directors such as Paul Verhoeven, Franklin J. Schaffner, Richard Fleischer, Fred Schepisi, Michael Crichton, Jack Smight, Gordon Douglas, J. Lee Thompson, Paul Wendkos, John Frankenheimer, and Joe Dante.
