About Immortal

Immortal may refer to multiple musical artists with the same or similar name: 1. Immortal is a Norwegian black metal band from Bergen, founded in 1991 by Abbath Doom Occulta (Olve Eikemo) and Demonaz Doom Occulta (Harald Nævdal). Abbath initially performed as bassist before switching to guitar, while Demonaz served as guitarist. The band worked with several drummers in its early years, including Grim, Armagedda, and Hellhammer, before Horgh (Reidar Horghagen) joined as a permanent member in 1996. Although Immortal has most often functioned as a trio, several recordings were made as a duo featuring different combinations of Abbath, Demonaz, and Horgh. In 2016, Loudwire ranked Immortal among the best metal bands of all time. The band developed out of earlier projects including Old Funeral and Amputation, both active in the late 1980s. Old Funeral, founded by Abbath and Tore Bratseth, went through multiple lineup changes, including members such as Demonaz and Varg Vikernes, before disbanding in 1992. Amputation, formed by Demonaz and Jørn Inge Tunsberg, released two demos before disbanding in 1990. Immortal was formed in 1991 with Abbath on bass and vocals, Demonaz on guitar, Jørn on guitar, and Armagedda on drums. Early demo recordings reflected a death metal style, but the band soon shifted toward black metal, influenced by musicians such as Euronymous and bands including Bathory and Celtic Frost. Their self-titled EP "Immortal" was released in 1991, followed by the debut album "Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism" in 1992, which established their early black metal sound. Subsequent albums "Pure Holocaust" (1993) and "Battles in the North" (1995) expanded on this style with faster tempos and themes centered on darkness, cold, and winter landscapes. In 1997, "Blizzard Beasts" introduced elements of thrash metal alongside the band’s established style. Around this time, Demonaz developed severe tendinitis and was no longer able to perform on guitar, leading Abbath to assume guitar duties. Despite this, Demonaz remained involved as the band’s primary lyricist and manager. With the addition of Horgh on drums, the band achieved a more stable lineup. The album "At the Heart of Winter" (1999) marked a stylistic shift toward a more complex fusion of black metal and thrash metal and is often regarded as one of their most notable releases. During touring for this album, Iscariah joined as bassist and later became a full member. In 1999, former drummer Grim died by suicide; he had previously toured with the band and appeared in promotional materials. The album "Damned in Black" (2000) continued elements of the band’s earlier style, followed by "Sons of Northern Darkness" (2002), released after the band signed with Nuclear Blast. Immortal performed at major festivals including Wacken Open Air in 2002. In 2003, the band split due to personal reasons. During the hiatus, Abbath formed the band I, which released the album "Between Two Worlds" in 2006, with Demonaz contributing lyrics. Immortal reunited in 2007 and performed at several festivals, including Inferno Festival, Tuska Open Air, Metal Camp, and Wacken Open Air. The lineup included Abbath, Horgh, and bassist Apollyon. The band resumed full activity and released the album "All Shall Fall" in 2009. Work on further material was reported in the following years, and members of the band appeared in the documentary "Until the Light Takes Us". In the mid-2010s, internal disputes arose regarding the rights to the band’s name. In March 2015, Abbath left Immortal following disagreements with the other members and subsequently began a solo career under the name Abbath. Although there were initial reports that the band might disband, Demonaz and Horgh continued the project. Demonaz returned to performing guitar and took on vocal duties. The album "Northern Chaos Gods" was released in 2018 and featured Demonaz as the central member, with production by Peter Tägtgren. Further legal disputes over the band name occurred between Demonaz and Horgh. Demonaz had registered the name as a trademark in Norway in 2019, but Horgh successfully appealed the registration. Despite this, later developments indicated that Demonaz retained control of the band name. In 2022, Immortal announced the album "War Against All", which was released in 2023 with Demonaz as the sole listed member of the band.
