About Huw Costin

Huw Costin is a British singer-songwriter known for his emotional vocal style, melancholic lyrics, and a penchant for writing nifty pop songs when the mood takes him. Perhaps he is best known for his output with the now defunct Earth the Californian Love Dream, performing alongside Richard Warren (aka Echoboy) in the Cold Light Of Day, and adding his vocals and lyrics to early sides by Smith & Mudd. As influenced by the folk, country, and rock of the 60's and 70's as the Nottingham ambient scene of the early nineties, and though compared to Big Star and Ian Brown, Costin takes inspiration from a more eclectic body of sounds and players in the creation of his own music. His debut solo album - Regrets - found it's way into the NME Yearbook as a top 10 album despite being unfinished and unreleased: "It's like the third Big Star album mixed with the Stone Roses... It'll make you cry." NME Between the unofficial and official release of 'Regrets', 'Full Moon at Christmas Time' was released on the Verdant label: "More like a Ted Hughes poem (see The Warm and The Cold) than a song by a modern day artist" BANDIDGE.COM ‘Full Moon…’ is a beguilingly bare flirtation with the good side of psychedelia. “ CHANNEL4.COM “Huw Costin plies his trade in stark, sparse, acoustic melancholy… an honest, intelligent and talented songwriter.” TASTY FANZINE “Beautiful, psychedelic and haunting I can’t wait to hear the rest of the tracks as they are released.” EYES FOR INDIE On general release a 4 star review in described 'Regrets' as: "an emotive recollection of a love gone wrong" UNCUT "'Carrie's Gone' is a beautiful ballad...'Lover' is sublime. 'Fight The World' is a beautiful if embittered tune that feels like the bustling city streets that a man sits on whilst screaming his heart out...'I'm Gonna Miss You'...is a stillborn lover's lament". NIGHT FLIGHT "It's largely acoustic but broad in scope, from 60s-style folk (I'm Gonna Miss You, Time) to dark, thudding indie (Leisure & Technology). Costin's voice recalls The Coral's James Skelly then Ian Brown but its real appeal are the subtle, addictive melodies." NOTTINGHAM EVENING POST Huw Costin is currently mixing his second solo album, due out this year, and has recently started recording with a new band.
