About Hulkoff

Hulkoff is the solo project of Pär Hulkoff, founder, vocalist and guitarist of the Swedish industrial metal band Raubtier and Scythikon as well as country rock band Bourbon Boys. Launched in 2017, the project gave Pär an opportunity to explore themes and musical influences beyond his previous work, combining heavy metal, Nordic folk traditions, industrial elements and historical storytelling into a distinctive sound rooted in Scandinavian culture, mythology and history. Originally conceived as a solo studio project, Hulkoff gradually evolved into both a full live band and a broader musical platform through which Pär explored the history, languages, mythology and traditional music of Northern Europe. The project's debut single, Faravid, was released on 19 May 2017 and quickly gained attention, reaching number four on Spotify's Viral 50 chart. It was followed by Dragonrider, Einherjr and Ibor & Aio, the latter featuring Joakim Brodén of Sabaton. These releases culminated in the debut album Kven, released on 17 November 2017. The album established the foundation of Hulkoff's sound through a combination of heavy riffs, industrial influences, epic melodies and lyrics inspired by Nordic history, mythology and ancient warrior cultures. In 2018, Kven received a special reissue through Soyuz Music for the Russian and CIS markets. This edition included the standalone single Beast Mode as well as the previously unreleased bonus track Scorched Earth, helping introduce the project to a broader international audience. During the same period, Hulkoff also released the standalone single Scyth, further expanding the project's catalogue between album cycles. Following the Kven era, Hulkoff evolved from a studio project into a full live band. The live lineup consists of Pär Hulkoff on vocals and guitar, Anders Johansson on drums, Niklas Johansson on bass and Kalle Johansson on guitar. The lineup has remained largely unchanged throughout the project's existence and has become a familiar sight at festivals and concerts across Scandinavia and Europe. Hulkoff's second studio album, Pansarfolk, was released in 2020 in both Swedish and English versions. The album marked a significant evolution of the project's sound, introducing traditional Nordic instruments such as talharpa and nyckelharpa while maintaining the heavy metal foundation established on the debut. The album became a major success and helped establish Hulkoff as one of Sweden's leading modern folk metal artists. The incorporation of traditional Scandinavian instruments laid the groundwork for the increasingly folk-oriented direction that would define subsequent releases. The momentum continued with Ragnarök in 2021, once again released in both Swedish and English editions. Exploring themes drawn from Norse mythology, ancient warfare and Scandinavian heritage, the album further developed the project's blend of heavy metal and Nordic folk traditions while broadening its international audience. Between album releases, Hulkoff maintained a steady flow of new material. Among the most notable standalone releases was Krigsherren and its English counterpart Warlord, written as a tribute to Swedish strongman and MMA fighter Andreas "Bane" Gustafsson. Other releases, including Hammarslag, continued the project's fascination with Nordic history, warrior culture and mythology while keeping listeners engaged between major album cycles. In 2023, Hulkoff released Hersir. Unlike its two predecessors, the album was primarily released in English rather than as a complete bilingual project. The album campaign began with the single Berserkr, which marked an important milestone in the evolution of the project as it featured Pär Hulkoff performing violin himself after several years of dedicated study. Singles such as Dragon Tattoo further introduced the album, while Helsingjaval became the most notable Swedish-language counterpart associated with the release. The album continued to expand the project's use of folk influences and historical themes while refining the balance between traditional instrumentation and modern metal production. Later that year, Hulkoff released Stenfinn as a Christmas gift to fans. Inspired by the traditional Swedish Yuletide song Staffan Stalledräng (Staffansvisan), the track reimagined a centuries-old folk tradition through the lens of modern Nordic metal and further demonstrated the project's growing connection to Scandinavian folk music and cultural heritage. The years following Hersir saw a succession of releases including Det Gamla Blodet, Old Blood (Acoustic Version), Loke and To Jotunheim, each exploring different aspects of Nordic mythology, heritage and tradition while bridging the gap to the next album. During this period, Pär Hulkoff continued to expand the musical scope of the project through traditional instrumentation. Having introduced his own violin playing during the Hersir era, he further developed this aspect of the sound alongside talharpa and other Nordic folk instruments, contributing to the richer and more organic arrangements that would characterize the next chapter of the project. In 2026, Hulkoff released Jotunheim, once again issuing the album in both Swedish and English versions. Inspired by the realm of the giants from Norse mythology, the album further strengthened the project's signature blend of heavy metal, Nordic folk instrumentation and historical storytelling. Featuring an even greater emphasis on traditional instruments such as talharpa and violin, Jotunheim represented the culmination of the musical evolution that began with Pansarfolk, combining crushing metal riffs with the organic sounds of wood, horsehair and steel. Although Hulkoff performs live as a four-piece band consisting of Pär Hulkoff, Anders Johansson, Niklas Johansson and Kalle Johansson, the studio recordings often feature additional musicians, instruments and arrangements beyond what is represented on stage. This distinction has allowed the project to evolve from the relatively straightforward metal sound of Kven into the increasingly elaborate folk-inspired soundscapes of its later releases while retaining the same powerful live identity. Through a combination of heavy metal, traditional Nordic instrumentation, historical storytelling and a deep fascination with the mythology and cultures of Northern Europe, Hulkoff has created a musical identity that stands apart from both Raubtier and the wider folk metal scene. What began as a solo side project has grown into one of Sweden's most distinctive modern metal acts, successfully bridging the worlds of Scandinavian folk traditions and contemporary heavy music.
