About Herman Rarebell & Friends

Between touring as the current drummer in Michael Schenker's band, former Scorpions man Herman Rarebell put together this solo album of acoustic re-workings of Scorpions songs he had a major hand in writing. Herman obviously plays drums on all of the songs, while guitarist Robby Lochner and bassist Dario Seixas, both from Jack Russell's version of Great White, and flamenco guitarists José Antonio Rodríguez and Corey Whitehead make up the rest of the band, and different vocalists sing each song. The invited singers range from the more obvious (Jack Russell and Don Dokken were both featured on Rarebell's previous solo album, and Doogie White is the current singer in Michael Schenker's band), to the less obvious like brilliantly soulful American covers band singer Michael Nagy (who sings Animal Magnetism), and George Daniels (Arizona), the front-man of a little known band called Unbreakable, whose album Rarebell produced in 2012. The versions here are not just straight acoustic versions of the originals, but re-workings, making some, like Another Piece of Meat featuring the album's stand-out vocal performance from Tony Martin (probably his most impossibly highest vocal since the Black Sabbath days), into almost completely different songs, while former Santana singer Alex Ligertwood makes Is There Anybody There? better than the original. Some, like Toto's Bobby Kimball, are given the thankless task of trying to do something which doesn't suit the format (Rock You Like A Hurricane), but by and large everyone does a superb job. For any fans of older Scorpions material, this is far more worthwhile than the band's own acoustic albums, because the re-workings are much smarter and less straight forward.
