About Hanan Townshend

Hanan Townshend is a New Zealand-born composer and pianist whose work spans contemporary classical music, ambient composition, and film scoring. His music is often described as poetic and immersive, shaped by silence, restraint, and an attention to emotional detail. Townshend is a longtime collaborator of filmmaker Terrence Malick, contributing piano arrangements to the Palme d’Or winning The Tree of Life before going on to score To the Wonder, Knight of Cups, Voyage of Time and is contributing music to the upcoming film Way of the Wind. His filmography also includes scores for Julio Quintana’s Blue Miracle and The Long Game, as well as The Book of Vision, Semper Fi, and the psychological thriller Went Up The Hill. In documentary film, his work can be heard in Simple As Water, Outcry, Disgraced, and Fathom. In parallel with his screen work, Townshend has developed a body of solo music that exists outside cinematic narrative. These compositions favor space over density and feeling over resolution, often reflecting themes of loss, memory, and presence. His solo releases are less concerned with spectacle than with attention, inviting listeners into a slower, more inward experience. Townshend’s musical voice is shaped in part by his upbringing on a remote coastal farm in New Zealand, where a deep connection to landscape and natural rhythm first took hold.
