About Gottfried Ernst Pestel

Gottfried Ernst Pestel (also known as Gottfried Ernst Bestel; 1654–1732) was a German organist and composer associated with central Germany, with authority records placing his birth in Berga/Elster and his death in Altenburg. His music survives above all through manuscript transmission in early-18th-century keyboard anthologies: the Andreas-Bach-Buch tradition preserves a D-major “Partie” (a suite) attributed to him, and IMSLP also transmits a chorale setting titled Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ. In modern performance life, his name appears sporadically on recordings that explore central German repertory for organ and related traditions, including releases listed by Presto on the labels CPO and Querstand, offering a small but tangible window onto his present-day reception.
