About Georg Vogel

Georg Vogel (born 1988 in Salzburg, Austria) is an Austrian composer, keyboardist, instrument specialist and music theorist working in the fields of microtonal music, contemporary composition, improvisation and experimental jazz. He lives and works in Vienna and is widely known for his performances on historical and newly developed microtonal keyboard instruments, as well as for his research into alternative tuning systems. Biography Georg Vogel was born in Salzburg in 1988. He began studying classical piano at an early age and later focused on jazz piano and composition. From 2007 to 2011 he studied at the Vienna Private University of Music and Art (Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien), graduating with distinction. During this period he participated in international workshops with musicians such as Jim Black, George Garzone, Ralph Alessi and Drew Gress. Early in his musical development, Vogel became deeply interested in tuning systems beyond twelve-tone equal temperament, a focus that has shaped both his artistic and theoretical work ever since. Instruments and tuning systems A central aspect of Vogel’s work is his engagement with historical and contemporary microtonal keyboard instruments. He is a performer on the Clavemusicum Omnitonum, a microtonal harpsichord designed in 1606 by Vito Trasuntino, as well as on the Archicembalo. On these instruments, he performs both his own compositions and music by late Renaissance composers, particularly Nicola Vicentino. Alongside historical instruments, Vogel performs on and develops modern microtonal keyboards, most notably the M-Claviton, a 31edo keyboard instrument designed to realise meantone and just intonation systems in performance. His work focuses especially on quarter-comma meantone and extended just-intonation frameworks. Music and career Georg Vogel’s music operates at the intersection of composition and improvisation. His work draws from jazz, contemporary classical music and experimental practices, often combining complex rhythmic systems with microtonal harmonic structures. He performs regularly as a solo artist and leads several ensembles and long-term projects, including: Dsilton — a microtonal improvisation trio exploring 31-tone systems Flower — a project focused on microtonal jazz composition Tree — a piano trio integrating extended harmonic language and improvisation VogeL⅃ettner — an avant-jazz duo with drummer Andreas Lettner Vogel also collaborates in various duo and ensemble formats with musicians from the European contemporary and improvised music scenes. Studio31 Georg Vogel is involved in Studio31 (also known as Studio31+), a research and development initiative dedicated to the study and construction of microtonal keyboard instruments. The studio was founded by a collective of researchers and musicians and operates with the support of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The project combines artistic research, instrument design and performance practice. Compositions and recordings Vogel’s output includes solo works, ensemble compositions and collaborative recordings. His music frequently explores polytonality, microtonality and non-standard formal structures. Recordings of his projects have been released on independent labels and digital platforms, documenting both composed material and improvised performance contexts. Style and influence Georg Vogel’s work is characterised by a systematic and exploratory approach to sound, tuning and rhythm. By combining historical microtonal traditions with contemporary improvisation and instrument design, he occupies a distinctive position within European experimental music. His work has influenced musicians interested in alternative tuning systems, keyboard innovation and the integration of theory and performance.
