About Gentlemen Afterdark
Gentlemen Afterdark (sometimes credited as Gentlemen After Dark) were a popular Arizona-based postpunk/new wave/New Romantic band featuring charismatic lead vocalist Brian Smith, Barry Smith, Robin Johnson, Fred Cross and Winston Watson. Originally a tight, melodic Tucson-based pop-punk band called the Pills, the Gentlemen changed their name and relocated to Phoenix where they immediately gained huge popularity on the burgeoning Phoenix/Tempe scene. The Gentlemen's self-titled vinyl EP was co-produced by rock legend and Gentlemen fan Alice Cooper; they released a second best-selling EP a year later and soon relocated to Los Angeles, where People magazine picked them as "stars of the future" (along with Tom Cruise and Glenn Close) in their 10th anniversary issue. The Pills and Gentlemen Afterdark remain legendary among Arizona music fans, and members of the band have gone on to success in numerous other bands; notably, Brian Smith was the lead singer for the hugely underrated New York Dolls/glam rock/metal influenced Beat Angels, and Winston Watson played drums in Bob Dylan's band for many years.
