About French For Rabbits

French for Rabbits are a dreamy alt-folk duo from Wellington, New Zealand. Their songs, often awash in nautically themed language, tell delicate stories of longing and regret. For the uninitiated, their music is reminiscent of dream-folk troubadours Marissa Nadler and Alela Diane or perhaps an acoustic Mazzy Star. Brooke Singer, who previously played in the much-loved Ragamuffin Children folk band and the shoegaze outfit The O’Lovelys, and jazz guitarist John Fitzgerald, formed the duo in 2011 after they both graduated from university. They have toured in New Zealand, and played alongside the likes of Jess Chambers, Darren Hanlon and Tiny Ruins. In 2012 they released a lo-fi video for their song ‘Claimed by the Sea’ before the release of their debut EP ‘Claimed by the Sea’ on March 1st via the Wellington music collective ‘Home Alone Music’ also home to Urbantramper, Timothy Blackman and City Oh Sigh. Their music has been described by bloggers as being “beautifully enchanted” and “haunting, to say the least”.
