About Freddy McQuinn

Freddy McQuinn is an artist from Paris who has been living and creating music in London for over a decade. He picked up the guitar at the age of 16, and by 18 he was cutting his teeth as a singer and guitarist with bands in Paris during the funky mid-90's. At the tender age of 21, he took the ferry boat to London, where he met his musical sidekick, Simbad. The musical chemistry was immediately apparent so they built their own studio in the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, East London, where they both still work. Gradually they mastered the art of making electronic music and, under the name Twitch, they released their first 12-inch entitled Blow Your Blues Away, which was played by Radio Nova in Paris every day in a row for two years. During this time, they experimented with many different styles, from Broken Beat under the name Heal, right through to Afrobeat as Les Barons. Change of name and phase: it was time for Marathon Men to hit the racks and smash dance floors everywhere. After acclaimed remixes (see below) and 12-inches on their own promotional label, Je Ne Sais Quoi Recordings, their track "In Paradise" reached the year's top 30 on Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 show, "Worldwide". Their remixes and 12's can always be found on top playlists from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, Norman Jay, and Moody Man. Eventually they released an album on Chillifunk records entitled Blessings. Over the years, Freddy has collaborated and played with countless well-known artists such as Keziah Jones, Mocky, M (Mathieu Chedid), Sebastien Martel, Julien Loureau, Maxime Zampieri, Smadj, Juan Rozoff, Sandra N'kake, and Z Star to name but a few. This year Freddy recorded his own album of songs rather than grooves; returning to a more organic approach with a blend of real instruments (mostly played by himself) and a well-measured dose of electronic programming. "Exile on Brick Lane" is a heartfelt journey through his experiences of London's East End. Although eclectic in its musical styles, the songs are united by Freddy's distinctive vocals and guitars, which perfectly complement the poignant, tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Freddy McQuinn is currently preparing his live performances...
