About Feike Asma

Feike Pieter Asma (April 21, 1912 in Den Helder – December 18, 1984 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch organist, conductor and composer. Asma was a son of the musician Johannes Frederik Asma. He gained his first experience as an organist at the Reformed Church in Den Helder and was an organ student with Jan Zwart from 1928 to 1937. He later studied piano and composition with Hugo van Dalen at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague under the direction of Jan Koetsier, and orchestra and choir conducting with Eduard Flipse. In 1950/51 he took part in a master class for conductors with Paul van Kempen. In 1933 Asma became organist at the Hooglandse Kerk in Leiden, and in 1943 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church (Burgwalkerk) in The Hague. In 1965 he moved to Maassluis and was organist at the Groote Kerk. Asma gave organ concerts at home and abroad and played numerous records on. For his commitment to French Romantic organ music, he received the Arts, Sciences, Lettres award from the Académie française twice (1964 and 1975). Awards: 1967: Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau Wolfert-van-Borselenpenning of the City of Rotterdam Afterlife: The Feike Asma Concours has been a national competition for young Dutch organists since 2004.
