About Ewert Sundja & Thief
Formally, there is the typical set up – four friends playing rock in a standard formation. And yet, the background and musical conviction of the THIEF members vary from jazz to metal. This creates the unique musical space, which often bypasses typical solutions. It is under this (at times varied) crust that the multi-layered, deep, and intriguingly personal world unfolds, beckoning to be discovered. Thief was formed in november 2004 when members from once rivalling bands started jamming together. Couple of jamsessions later they all realized that playing together was the musical output they were looking for. In the beginning of 2005 they wanted to record a demo, and said to each other that in february they will get it done, not knowing yet though, how and where to do it. Luckily enough Ewert met their current manager from Snowdog Records and on 1st of February, Thief was recording its first songs. In fall 2005, original drummer Joel Võsu was replaced by Kristjan Kallas which in a way became the turning point for the band. Joel's experimental and loose beats were picked up by Kristjan who took the best of what Joel had done, added his experience as a classical and jazz drummer and after that everything started to sound more firm and concrete. Ewert probably still childly believes that music can make a difference, and knowing that, makes possession of that powerful tool emotinally rewarding but at the same time mentally responsible for your words and acts. Therefore strories about his personal struggles through the years and questions about Love and God, Life and Death are honestly put into lyrics and music. Hoping that some of his questions and some of his answers may help others when they are in that point of their lives that they start to ask those questions or try to find the answers.
