About Esteban Elizondo Iriarte
Gipuzkoa-born organist in San Sebastián on 6 August 1945. He studied piano and organ at the Conservatory of Music of San Sebastián, and in both he won the First Prize at the end of his degree. He then went to Vienna to further his organ studies with Anton Heille at the Wiener Hochschule für Musik. He obtained a PhD in Philosophy and Educational Sciences from the University of Barcelona thanks to his thesis La organería romántica en el País Vasco y Navarra (1856-1940). It was published at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and attracted a great deal of attention in the world of organs. He was awarded the Special Research Prize by the University of the Basque Country and the Orfeón Donostiarra and received the Special Prize of the University of Barcelona (2003) for his doctoral thesis. Since 1971 he has been professor of organ at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de San Sebastián and among his students he has organ teachers from several Spanish conservatories. In addition, there are titular organists of the churches and cathedrals of the Basque Country and Navarre. Between 1989 and 1993 he taught at the Early Music Courses of Magnano (Italy) analysing the influence of Italy and Spain on each other. In 1999 he was appointed Honorary Assistant Professor at the University of the Basque Country. Thanks to this, he offered several courses on organs from the Basque Country and Navarre. Between 1981 and 1985 he was deputy director of the San Sebastian Conservatory and from the latter year to 1991 he was its director. In 1982 he was appointed Technical Advisor in Music Training to the Department of Education of the Basque Government, a position he held until 1985. Thanks to him, the International Course of Romantic Music for organ was established, which has been held in San Sebastian since 1983, as part of the Musical Fortnight that takes place in this same city. He has given concerts as an organist in several European countries and in the United States, Canada and Japan. In most cases, it includes in its repertoire pieces for the organ by authors from the Basque Country and Navarre of a romantic style. He has recorded ten albums and in most cases works with Basque authors of early Spanish and romantic music. Jesús Guridi also made the first recording of all the composting pieces for the organ. He has published several articles and given lectures related to the organ. He is also co-author of the book Organs of Gipuzkoa and coordinator of the book Enseñanza de la Música, published by the University of the Basque Country.
