About Erkut Taçkın
Erkut Taçkın’s musical life unfolded as a journey shaped by restlessness, resilience, and a deep loyalty to the spirit of rock ’n’ roll. Beginning in the mid-1950s at the Naval Academy High School on Heybeli Island, he emerged as one of the earliest voices of rock music in Turkey, first with the Genç Denizciler (Young Sailors) Orchestra and later through pioneering ensembles that brought beat and rock sounds to Turkish audiences. His path led him from school stages to Ankara’s music scene, from factory floors in Germany back to the forefront of Turkey’s emerging popular music, where he became a driving force behind the beat movement of the 1960s. Milestones such as Mühür Gözlüm cemented his place in musical memory, while later years saw him move between orchestras, clubs, cabarets, and notable collaborations, including with Ayten Alpman. Though he stepped away from the spotlight for long periods, Taçkın repeatedly returned to the stage, proving that music was not merely a phase in his life but a lasting calling that endured beyond pauses, borders, and changing eras. He passed away at his home in Istanbul on 14 December 2020 at the age of 78.
