Eiji Oue (大植 英次 Ōue Eiji?, October 3, 1957 -) is a Japanese conductor. Oue was born in Hiroshima, Japan, and began his conducting studies with Hideo Saito of the Toho Gakuen School of Music. In 1978, he was invited by Seiji Ozawa to spend the summer studying at the Tanglewood Music Center. While there, he met Leonard Bernstein, who became a mentor; he won the Tanglewood Koussevitzky Prize in 1980. He also studied under Bernstein as a conducting fellow at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute. He was the music director of the Erie Philharmonic from 1991 to 1995 and associate conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1995 to 2002 he was the ninth music director of the Minnesota Orchestra, a position he relinquished to Osmo Vänskä in 2003. Oue served as Music Director of the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming. In addition to his directorship of this festival, his summer engagements have included appearances at the Ravinia, Tanglewood, Grand Park, Wolf Trap, Great Woods, Round Top and Midland[disambiguation needed] music festivals. Following a tour in 1997 with the NDR Philharmonie Hannover, Oue was subsequently appointed its principal conductor in September 1998. In 2003, he was appointed principal conductor of the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra and is the music director of the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona since September 2006. Oue made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival conducting Tristan and Isolde (2005). Further conducting engagements included the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, São Paulo State Symphony, and Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2006-2007 season, he recorded Niccolò Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Louis Spohr’s Violin Concerto No. 8 with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Hilary Hahn for Deutsche Grammophon.
